| Livelihood
Security through Integrated Natural Resource Management
(INRM) and Disaster Preparedness: |
Livelihood
insecurity, conflicts around these and the status of natural
resource management, is one of the major factors contributing
to vulnerability of those who are most oppressed. Equitable,
qualitative, quantitative, reliable distribution of natural
resources along with management rights for sustainability
of these resources, leads to secured and dignified livelihood
of the vulnerable community. Hence, Utthan focuses on
the community's rights and its active participation for
sustainable management of their basic natural resources,
on which these livelihoods depend.
Livelihood security and INRM is the key to Gender Empowerment,
peace and for improved quality of life. Thus, Utthan's
focus has been in helping the communities to augment
access and establish gender sensitive management systems
for equitable and sustainable natural resources supported
through diverse livelihood option.

Activities
have been carried out for conservation and creation of
water resources, conservation and upgrading of land, agriculture
and horticulture development and afforestation. All these
are carried out by various village level institutions
and community based organizations in Bhavnagar, Amreli,
Panchmahals and Dahod, covering all the 173 villages.
The major thrust in the recent past has been mainstreaming
gender and equity aspects in natural resource management
through various strategies such as evolving norms, precondition
for addressing gender conflict on a priority basis etc.
Various programs such as biodiversity for livelihood security
in the tribal area, adaptive strategies for disaster preparedness
in the coastal areas, community led and owned demonstration
of viable alternatives for better management of natural
resources such as sealing of wells, application of organic
manure, voices against exploitation of their resources
such as sand mining, awareness campaign for food security,
etc. have been initiated. |
