Why Natural Resources Management Matters
Sustainable management of natural resources is vital for ensuring long-term ecological balance, food security, and the well-being of marginalized communities. In regions like Gujarat, challenges such as water scarcity, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss directly impact livelihoods. Empowering communities to steward their natural resources fosters resilience against climate change and promotes inclusive development.
Utthan's Natural Resource Management (NRM) strategy is rooted in community participation, gender equity, and ecological sustainability. We focus on community-centric planning by engaging local communities in the planning and implementation of resource management initiatives; capacity building through training women and marginalized groups in sustainable practices and leadership roles; integrated resource management that combines water conservation, soil health, and biodiversity preservation in a holistic manner; and policy advocacy by collaborating with government bodies to influence policies that support sustainable resource use.
What we do
Utthan implements watershed development to improve water availability, control soil erosion, and boost farm productivity. It promotes sustainable agriculture through crop diversification, and traditional knowledge systems. Community-led biodiversity conservation initiatives protect native ecosystems while supporting eco-friendly livelihoods. The organisation also facilitates the adoption of renewable energy solutions like solar and biogas, reducing environmental impact and enhancing rural energy access.
Impact Highlights (2023–24)
15+ village ponds and traditional water bodies were rejuvenated through community-led planning.
Supported 248 individual and 23 village-level applications for water augmentation and desilting works.
Improved crop productivity and income stability through integrated soil and water conservation practices.
Implemented groundwater recharge through soak trenches, rainwater harvesting, and percolation tanks.
Women farmers in Kuda village, Bhavnagar trained in climate-resilient farming for saline soils.
Recognised by NABARD for achievements in watershed and horticulture development initiatives.
